Join Richard Guy Wilson on Thursday, Nov. 29 at 5:30 p.m. for a lecture on The Kentucky Houses of Stratton Hammon, a book by authors Winfrey P. Blackburn Jr. and R. Scott Gill. The book features a foreword written by the guest lecturer and distinguished architectural scholar, Richard Guy Wilson.
Many years in the making, this magnificent, full-color book showcases the residential architecture of Louisville’s own Stratton Hammon, whose architectural collection is kept at The Filson. All of Hammon’s Kentucky houses, most in Louisville but many throughout the state, are featured across the glossy pages. Each house is described in detail, including floor plans, and accompanied by the photography of John Nation. The book also includes a comprehensive biography of Hammon.
Hammon designed homes that recalled the Colonial American past while servicing the modern needs of their owners. He designed timelessly handsome, classically beautiful homes that remain highly sought-after many decades later.
Wilson holds the Commonwealth Professor’s Chair in Architectural History at the University of Virginia. His specialty is the architecture, design and art of the 18th to the 20th Century both in America and abroad. In 1986, he was made an honorary member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA).
Thank you to the following groups who have made this program possible: the AIA, Historic Homes Foundation, The University of Louisville Dept. of Fine Arts, Architectural Window, Door & Design Center and Timothy R. Winters, Architect.
There will be a wine and cheese reception before the lecture at 5:00 p.m. Book purchases and signing will be available after the lecture. Cost: Free for Filson members, members of the sponsoring groups and $5 for non-members.

Arcadia Publishing Looking for Local Photos
Arcadia Publishing in South Carolina is seeking Kentucky organizations to author/compile photographic histories of their town. Arcadia publishes a popular series of photographic histories called Images of America, which chronicles the histories of communities, towns, and neighborhoods throughout the country. Their numerous Kentucky titles in particular have been very successful.
Unlike many local history publishers, Arcadia is not a vanity press. Rather, the company finances the entire publication and pays royalties to the author/group, which makes it a great fundraiser for organizations and an effective way to bring attention to a group’s hometown. Arcadia’s marketing team also places the book in stores around your area while promoting the release in regional newspapers and media.
Luke Cunningham, a Kentucky native and editor for Arcadia, is eager to speak to any Main Street groups who are interested, or just simply want to find out more. Feel free to contact him at:
