The Kentucky Heritage Council and Preservation Kentucky, Inc. invite all interested in historic preservation or preservation-related issues to take part in the biennial Kentucky Historic Preservation conference – planned September 4-6, 2008 in Bardstown – by submitting a proposal for one of three categories: educational session, field session, or display board for the Preservation Gallery. Presenters in educational and field sessions will receive complimentary registration for the day of the presentation and a discounted registration for attending the full conference.

Preserving the Farm Landscape
The Kentucky Crossroads Rural Heritage Development Initiative (RHDI) is proud to present the “Preserving the Farm Landscape: Preservation Strategies for Farmland and Barns”, March 4, 2008 – Registration will begin at 9 a.m. with presentations starting at 9:30 and ending at 4 p.m., St. Catharine’s Motherhouse, St. Catharine, Kentucky (located just outside of Springfield, KY on Highway 150 towards Bardstown)**
Keynote speakers include, Jeffrey Marshall, Pennsylvania Heritage Conservancy, (www.heritageconservancy.org) who will give a presentation on the Pennsylvania Heritage Conservancy’s “Lasting Landscapes”, an innovative approach to meet the ongoing challenge of preserving and protecting natural and historic heritage by involving local communities to combine complementary natural and historic resources, establish large and contiguous preserved areas, and achieve preservation objectives within an area’s cultural heritage and regional context.
Joshua Phillips, Preservation Maryland (www.preservationmaryland.org), will give a presentation on the Tobacco Barn Restoration Fund, developed in 2006 by Preservation Maryland to rehabilitate tobacco barns as well as give case studies of successful re-uses of tobacco barns.
There will also be talks on preservation practices at the Loretto Motherhouse’s farm in Marion County, the Fayette County Purchase of Development Rights program, the Clothesline of Quilts project and barn rehabilitation and re-use at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill. Lunch will be locally grown food from St. Catharine’s farm with a presentation on their farming practices.
Registration is $35 and includes lunch, breaks and educational material. The Rural Heritage Development Initiative is a three-year demonstration program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, in collaboration with Preservation Kentucky and the Kentucky Heritage Council, to help develop and implement preservation-based economic development strategies in the eight county Central Kentucky area of Boyle, Green, LaRue, Marion, Mercer, Nelson, Taylor and Washington. Fix-it and Mix-it Paint Workshop
The Blue Grass Trust for Historic Preservation is sponsoring a “Fix-it and Mix-it Paint Workshop” on Jan. 25, 2008. Tom Radden of Radden Paint will do a presentation on the history of painting techniques and colors, components of paint, and identifying and solving paint problems. 2-5:00 pm at the Hunt-Morgan House, 210 N.
